Care and Rituals

Bathrooms are spaces of personal rituals and atmosphere, where materials, lighting, and colour shape how they are experienced. They must adapt to the rhythm of our daily life, from morning rituals to evening unwind. Among the projects of Andrew Dobson Architects, bathrooms were treated with the same level of consideration as any other part of the home, ensuring they felt integrated, refined, and suited to each client’s lifestyle.

Some of the most intriguing design challenges come with compact cloakrooms cleverly carved out from underestimated corners. Often overlooked, these spaces present an opportunity for creativity. Without natural light or expansive layouts to rely on, you can turn to bold colours, striking patterns, and unexpected materials to bring them to life. As rooms frequently used by guests, they are a chance to introduce a sense of playfulness, designed to surprise and delight.

Bespoke details and materiality are at the heart of every bathroom I design. From intricate tilework to striking natural stones, bathrooms often allow for the use of solid, more expressive materials, either unique marbles or warm-toned woods to add depth and richness. Whether through material and tonal balance, or subtle design references, these spaces should feel naturally integrated with the rest of the home while maintaining their own distinct character.
